Tata Steel to produce 22 Vande Bharat trains in one year

Indian Railways Partners with Tata Steel for Manufacturing Vande Bharat Express Trains

Indian Railways has signed a deal with Tata Steel to produce 22 trains of Vande Bharat Express, India’s fastest and most advanced train, over the next year. The Ministry of Railways has set a production target of 200 Vande Bharat Express trains for the next two years, and the first sleeper version of the train is expected to run by the first quarter of 2024.

To meet the production targets, Indian Railways and Tata Steel have signed an agreement to speed up production work. Tata Steel will manufacture the seats in the Vande Bharat Express, from first AC to three-tier coaches, as well as the Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches of the train, which include structures of panels, windows, and railways.

Currently, Indian Railways has given a tender of approximately Rs 145 crore to Tata Steel for manufacturing the train parts, which are expected to be completed in 12 months. Tata Steel’s composites division has already begun working on the seating system of Vande Bharat Express, including 22 train sets with 16 coaches each.

Debashish Bhattacharya, Vice President (Technology and New Materials Business), Tata Steel, said, “The seats of this train are specially designed, which can rotate up to 180-degree and have aircraft-like passenger amenities, which are a first in India.” Tata Steel is constantly engaged in increasing its stake in the Railways and has also posted officials for coordinating with the Railways.

This partnership is a significant step towards boosting India’s railway infrastructure, improving passenger amenities, and promoting domestic manufacturing.
