GMR Smart Electricity Distribution Gets Order for Smart Meter Installations

New Delhi: GMR Power and Urban Infra Limited (GPUIL) announced on Monday that its subsidiary, GMR Smart Electricity Distribution Company, has successfully won a significant contract worth INR 7,593 crore for the implementation of a large-scale smart metering project in Uttar Pradesh.

According to a press statement released by the company, “GMR Smart Electricity Distribution Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of GMR Power and Urban Infra Limited (GPUIL), has been awarded a prestigious order of INR 7,593 crore to execute the RDSS program. This program is a timeline-based reforms plan initiated by the Ministry of Power, Government of India.”

The order, which involved installing 75.69 lakh prepaid smart metres across two distribution companies, Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited (DVVNL) and Purvanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited (PuVVNL), was obtained under the DBFOOT (Design, Build, Finance, Own, Operate, and Transfer) model. The largest combined package order of its kind, this order stands out.

The 22-district smart metering initiative would include important regions like Varanasi, Prayagraj, Agra, Mathura, and Aligarh, among others.

Srinivas Bommidala, Chairman of Energy at GMR Group, highlighted the firm’s dedication to embrace environmentally friendly and technologically advanced energy solutions while pursuing a customer-focused expansion strategy. Using a customer-focused growth approach, he said, “These wins highlight GMR’s ambition to pivot into the green and technology-based energy market. With this mandate, the GMR Group enters the power industry’s B2C market on a significant scale and will benefit GPUIL shareholders.

Bommidala added that this achievement fits with their Energy 2.0 strategy, which is focused on finding new opportunities for development in the power industry. The business has big intentions for more projects in this area.

The project’s scope covers the design, provision, installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of prepaid smart metre infrastructure for a period of ten years. This infrastructure will include both customer premises and the network level, including distribution transformers and feeders.

This big contract award represents a turning point for GMR Group as they enter the B2C sector of the power industry and reaffirm their dedication to technologically advanced, environmentally friendly energy solutions.
