L&T to Construct Energy Infrastructure for Largest Green Hydrogen Plant

Larsen and Toubro Secures Lucrative Hydrocarbon Contract

Larsen & Toubro (L&T), the power transmission and distribution business, has announced its involvement in the construction of the world’s largest green hydrogen plant, being developed by NEOM Green Hydrogen Company. The plant, situated in Oxagon within Saudi Arabia’s NEOM region, aims to produce green hydrogen on an unprecedented scale for global export in the form of green ammonia.

With a staggering investment of $8.4 billion, the project has gained support from 23 local, regional, and global banking and financial institutions. Financial closure has been achieved, and construction activities are progressing according to plan.

L&T has received approval from Air Products, the system-integrating EPC contractor and exclusive off-taker of green ammonia, to establish renewable energy generation, storage, and grid infrastructure for the project. The company has been awarded contracts worth $2.779 billion, encompassing various elements. These include the construction of a 2.2 GW PV solar plant, 1.65 GW wind generation balance of plant, and a 400 MWh battery energy storage system.

In addition, L&T will be responsible for building three 380 kV Switching Stations, 306 km of 380 kV Overhead lines, Underground Cables, and the Energy Power Monitoring System (EPMS) for the Kingdom’s Grid network.

CEO and MD of Larsen & Toubro, S. N. Subrahmanyan, highlighted the potential of such large-scale initiatives to accelerate the global energy transition. He emphasized that these technology-driven projects align with L&T’s growth aspirations and reflect their commitment to professionalism, timely delivery, and quality, as trusted by their customers.

T Madhava Das, Whole-Time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Utilities) at Larsen & Toubro, expressed pride in being associated with the project, which aims to integrate 4GW of renewable energy to produce up to 600 tonnes of carbon-free hydrogen per day.

Wolfgang Brand, Vice President of NEOM Green Hydrogen from Air Products, the prime EPC contractor and system integrator, expressed excitement for the progress made in establishing the world’s largest green hydrogen production facility in NEOM. Brand stated, “We are delighted to commence the full execution of this pioneering project and are honored to collaborate with our partner L&T in their mission to produce carbon-free hydrogen using renewable energy.”

The initiative spearheaded by L&T and its partners represents a significant milestone in the quest for sustainable energy solutions and contributes to global efforts for a greener future.
