Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd., a renowned metal producer, has embarked on a transformative journey into the world of energy storage. Their groundbreaking move involves the production of battery-grade aluminum foil, a crucial component in the production of lithium-ion cells.
With an impressive annual production capacity of 20,000 tonnes, Shyam Metalics is poised to play a pivotal role in securing India’s position as a major player in the global lithium-ion cell industry. This industry is projected to achieve a staggering capacity of 6,500 GWh per year by 2030, according to the company’s latest exchange filing on September 25.
Third-party laboratories have rigorously tested and endorsed Shyam Metalics’ tailor-made battery aluminum foil, which boasts thickness options ranging from 12 microns to 20 microns. Moreover, the company boasts state-of-the-art German machinery capable of crafting aluminum foils as thin as 6 microns. This ultra-thin foil is primed to meet the evolving demands of lithium-ion cell technologies, enhancing the cell’s gravimetric energy density. This density measures the amount of energy packed into the cell per unit weight, expressed in Watt-hour/Kilogram.
Brij Bhushan Agarwal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director at Shyam Metalics, expressed his optimism, stating, “This strategic move will liberate India from import dependence, bolster upstream component manufacturing, refine material processing, nurture skills, cultivate technological expertise, and fortify the infrastructure for an entirely indigenous value chain.”
India’s ambitious green energy goals call for approximately 903 GWh of energy storage system capacity, crucial for decarbonizing both the mobility and power sectors. Multiple industry and policy assessments concur that lithium-ion batteries are set to dominate a substantial share of this burgeoning market. Shyam Metalics’ foray into battery-grade aluminum foil production stands as a testament to their commitment to India’s energy revolution.
