Indian Armed Forces Sign Several Projects with BEL to Boost Defence Capabilities
The Indian Armed Forces have signed several contracts with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) to acquire state-of-the-art defence equipment to enhance their combat capabilities. These projects include equipment for the Air Force, Army and Navy, developed and manufactured indigenously with the help of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
Air Force Projects:
BEL Bangalore has signed a contract with DRDO lab Combat Aircraft Systems Development & Integration Centre (CASDIC) for the development and manufacture of 90 Electronic Warfare (EW) Suite Equipment for Medium Lift Helicopters. This includes Radar Warning Receiver (RWR), Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS) and Counter Measure Dispensing System (CMDS) which will significantly improve the survivability of IAF helicopters while undertaking missions against adversaries.
Another project signed with BEL Bangalore is for the Maintenance of two Squadrons of Akash Missile System, a medium range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed by DRDO. The system can target aircraft up to 30 km away and neutralize aerial threats like fighter jets, cruise missiles and air-to-surface missiles.
Army Projects:
BEL Ghaziabad has signed a contract for Project Akashteer, an Automated Air Defence Control & Reporting System, which will enable monitoring of low-level airspace over Indian Army battle areas and effectively control the Ground-Based Air Defence Weapon Systems.
BEL Kotdwara will manufacture Instant Fire Detection and Suppressing System (IFDSS) for T 72, a system indigenously designed by DRDO.
Navy Projects:
BEL has developed and manufactured Software Defined Radio (SDR) (1265 Nos.) Portables for Indian Navy jointly with Defence Electronics Application Laboratory (DEAL) DRDO. The SDR portables are developed in three configurations – SDR Manpack, SDR Fixed Pack and SDR Handheld, to meet the specific operational requirements of the Indian Navy. SDR Portables are new generation software-defined radios that support multi-band, multi-channel, multi-role/mission operation with voice/data to meet the needs of network-centric warfare of Indian Navy.
BEL Panchkula will manufacture HD VLF HF Receiver (1178 Nos.), a communication equipment designed to receive and demodulate data/voice in VLF and HF bands of operation in ships and submarines of the Indian Navy. The equipment incorporates advanced DSP technology with built-in high-grade encryption.
Sarang (12 Nos.), developed by DLRL and manufactured by BEL Hyderabad, will be installed on Kamov 31 helicopters of Indian Navy. This system intercepts, detects and identifies radar emitters using state-of-the-art technologies.
Other projects signed with the Indian Navy include INS-SA, CMS for P17 & P28, and Varuna EW, further boosting India’s defence capabilities.
